History

1901

Organized on July 18, 1901, IUEC Local 16’s jurisdiction stretches from Lafayette, LA, to Biloxi, MS, and then north to Jackson, MS. Founded to meet the demand for skilled elevator mechanics in the area. Over the years the Local’s reach has expanded to include 63 counties across Louisiana and Mississippi.

Charitable and Labor Efforts

We actively partner with and support our local AFL-CIO and NABTU, attending weekly Southeast Louisiana Building and Construction Trades Council meetings and giving our support to pro-labor candidates. Local 16 also supports the American Cancer Society, The Wounded Warrior Project and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital every year. We also give our backing to Local 5’s Lift for a Vet, The Toy Box Connection, and a variety of other local charities and golf tournament fundraisers such as DAD’s Day.

Today

Local 16 members continue to play a key role in maintaining the safety and functionality of elevators within the region, spearheaded by a strong leadership team. Our Local President and the Executive Board work diligently with the business manager on local issues, ensuring Local 16’s success will be sustained for years to come.

Throughout our history, we’ve been able to say that Local 16 is home to the best, most qualified, and safest elevator constructors in the region. This is as true today as it was when we began our mission, thanks to the National Elevator Industry Educational Program (NEIEP)’s apprenticeship program and continued education courses for qualified mechanics.
